Description

This is considered the classic account of one of the most shocking events in England's history, the trial and execution of King Charles I. Miss Wedgwood, whose reputation as a historian is unmatched, is also a magnificent prose stylist. Her meticulous research and interpretation of the events are enlivened with vivid details of the characters, events, history and physical settings, making it a excellent narrative that is hard to put down.

I read the entire trilogy. The middle volume was a lot of chronology of the actual military war, and is less interesting to me than the first and last. Read at least vol 1 and 2.It's the story of a society unraveling into warfare and slaughter. Watch how less radical men supported the process in the beginning, but fell away as it reached its culmination, ending with a stroke of an axe which was abhorred by almost the entire society, and was wanted and insisted upon only by a tiny number of men, perhaps a few score, who had come to control all the levers of power via the Army.Read the newspapers in between chapters. Ask yourself, how far along in this process are we today?
